ARTISTS

The edition 2016 of the Raízes do Atlântico Festival will be a renewed journey throughout the world, but above all through the Portuguese-speaking world and the countries can be found in the Atlantic Ocean thereby setting the tone for the festival’s own name.

As the starting point of this journey, we will begin in Madeira Island with XARABANDA, a band that features the Madeiran musical heritage and  all the unique instruments that define our music.

The next destination will be the Portuguese mainland, with the portuguese diva LULA PENA. An unique voice defines this artist, she embrace  the Fado genre as her base but also makes forays into other musical genres, Lula represents the best that Portugal has to offer in the musical scene, a concert not to be missed.

In search of new sounds in the world we distance ourselves  from the Atlantic to meet another diva, but this time from such an exotic country like Tunisia,  with GHALIA BENALI, considered by the specialized press the ambassador of Arab culture. An almost spiritual presence defines her concerts that have delighted crowds.

We then go to the UK with SONS OF KEMET, a band that makes its national debut at the Festival, they mix a European, African or even Caribbean sounds. A  unique creative Jazz formation that makes every concert a unique experience.

We’ll then start crossing the Atlantic Ocean and stop in one of the most beloved locations of the speaking portuguese tradition: Cape Verde, with the warm voice of ELIDA ALMEIDA. Winner of the prestigious award “Découvertes RFI” of France in 2015, Elida is already one of the best Cape Verde’s musical values, she will finish the big world tour organized by RFI in our festival.

The next stop will take us to South Africa, with a unexpected  concert on this edition with the eclectic sound of PETITE NOIR, one of the most international artists of that country. Noir features in his 2015 album a Modern Africa with pop and rock influences, that have taken him beyond the concept of “World Music”.

  • GhaliaBenali

One of the best concerts of this edition happens with the diva of Tunisia, Ghalia Benali, considered by the specialized press the ambassador of Arab culture.

Benali grew up in a family of artists in southern Tunisia and from an early age was influenced by music from Egypt, Syria, Iraq and of course Tunisia, but her connection to Europe, the continent which she  would study brought her some Western influences to her music.

With a voice from another world, almost spiritual, she mixes Arabic music with many other Western influences in unique way. Woman of  convictions, Ghalia Benali says that it is “Arabic music with new forms, sometimes festive but never profane, occasionally romantic and elegiac: a passport to many cultures.”

In her music, it almost seems that anyone can understand Arabic, and realizes  how we all share the same joys and sorrows. This artist does not leave anyone indifferent wherever she goes, she amazed the public and press in sold-out concerts, a concert to make us dream.
